Adam Walton ended his grasscourt season on a high, reaching the Newport Challenger final.
In the tournament's 50th edition, the Queenslander came tantalisingly close to joining John Fitzgerald, Wally Masur, Mark Philippoussis and Lleyton Hewitt on the tournament honour roll. He held six match points against Jacob Fearnley in the final, before the Brit emerged with a 5-7 7-6(8) 6-4 victory.
It provided a bittersweet end to Walton's otherwise strong week. After a campaign that saw him upset two seeds, including two-time finalist Alex Michelsen, he will now move back inside the world's top 80.
Walton carries form into the North American summer swing, with three Challenger finals on his 2026 record, as well as his first top-10 victory against Daniil Medvedev at Roland Garros.
John-Patrick Smith was also within touching distance of Newport silverware, advancing to his first Challenger doubles final of the year. Paired with Brazilian Fernando Romboli, the top seeds fell in a match tiebreak to New Zealander second seeds Finn Reynolds and James Watt.
In other Australian successes this week, Omar Jasika won his first singles title in 16 months, securing a World Tennis (formerly ITF) M15 trophy in Tokyo.
There was also an Australian haul at the WC175 German Open in Berlin, with Anderson Parker and Benjamin Wenzel both triumphing.
Parker did not drop a set to win the men’s wheelchair singles title. The 28-year-old left his best performance to last, securing a double-bagel victory against Dutchman Robin Groenwoud in the final.
Wenzel also had a resounding campaign, losing just five games for the entire tournament. Four of those games came in the final against Brazilian Leandro Pena, which he won 6-1 6-3.
On the ATP circuit this week, Smith is one of two Australians who will compete in Gstaad, Switzerland, paired again with Romboli in doubles.
He joins Marc Polmans at the ATP 250 tournament, with the Victorian hoping to build on his Wimbledon mixed doubles final run. Polmans is ranked as the top seed with Austrian Lucas Miedler.

Elena Micic and Alexandra Osborne will fly the Australian flag at the WTA 250 event in Athens.
Micic makes her WTA singles debut after successfully qualifying for the tournament. The 22-year-old dropped just two games in her opening match, before defeating 10th seed Anastasia Kulikova 6-3 3-6 6-4.
Meanwhile, Osborne will compete in doubles, pairing up with American Carmen Corley. They will face fourth seeds Maia Lumsden and Tang Qianhui first.
Fifteen Australians will take to the court on the ATP Challenger circuit, with 12 players competing in North American hardcourt tournaments.
In singles competition, Aleksandar Vukic, Tristan Schoolkate and Philip Sekulic will compete at the Granby Challenger in Canada, while Bernard Tomic and James McCabe lead the charge in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Pavle Marinkov and Thomas Fancutt aim to increase the Lincoln singles contingent, both competing in the final round of qualifying. For Fancutt, he aims to reach his first ATP Challenger hardcourt main draw since October 2024, following his suspension.
