The grasscourt season continues to be a fruitful period for Australian pro players, with 10 featuring in singles action at tour-level events this week.
And that’s in addition to the 11 Aussies embarking on their Wimbledon qualifying campaigns in Roehampton, who each need three match wins to earn a coveted place in the main draw at the All England Club.
WIMBLEDON QUALIFYING: Eleven Australians vying to create Roehampton magic
In Mallorca, Adam Walton and Marc Polmans both qualified for the main draw without losing a set.
Walton’s first-round opponent is wildcard and countryman Nick Kyrgios, guaranteeing an Aussie will progress to a last-16 meeting with second seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Polmans faces another wildcard, former world No.3 Grigor Dimitrov, at the ATP 250 event, and is also playing in the doubles draw with American Ryan Seggerman. Kyrgios will team with fellow Aussie John-Patrick Smith.
In Eastbourne, Aleksandar Vukic beat a pair of Brits in qualifying to set a first-round meeting with Jenson Brooksby in the main draw.
Alexei Popyrin faces British qualifier Jan Choinski for a shot at top seed and defending Eastbourne champion Taylor Fritz, whom Popyrin beat recently on clay in Geneva.
Five Aussie women feature in the Eastbourne women’s singles main draw including defending champion Maya Joint, who opens against qualifier Emiliana Arango.
Nottingham quarterfinalist Talia Gibson has drawn second seed Madison Keys, while Daria Kasatkina plays seventh seed McCartney Kessler.
Ajla Tomljanovic and Kimberly Birrell qualified for the main draw, where Birrell will meet fourth seed and 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova.
Tomljanovic, who opens against No.8 seed Elisabeta Cocciareto, is the lone Aussie woman in the top half of the draw.
At the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg, Germany, Australians Ellen Perez and Alexandra Osborne feature in the doubles event.
Perez and Dutch partner Demi Schuurs are the No.3 seeds while Osborne – playing with American Catherine Harrison – entered the main draw as an alternate pairing after the withdrawal of Shuko Aoyama and Liang En-shuo.
There, Osborne and Harrison face the star wildcard pairing of Venus Williams and Alexandra Eala.
Meanwhile, Dane Sweeny is the highest-seeded Australian man in action on Day 1 of Wimbledon qualifying.
Six Aussie men embark on their qualifying journeys on Monday night (AEST), with Sweeny competing on the lawns along with Tristan Schoolkate, Christopher O’Connell, Alex Bolt, Bernard Tomic and James McCabe.
Day 2 on Tuesday is when Wimbledon women’s qualifying begins and where another five Australians – Taylah Preston, Emerson Jones, Maddison Inglis, Priscilla Hon and Storm Hunter – will play their first-round matches.
O’Connell enters Wimbledon qualifying on a high after winning the ATP Challenger title in Nottingham, while Sweeny this week sits at a career-high ranking of world No.126, having recently reached the Ilkley Challenger semifinals on grass.
