Aussie Weekly Wrap: O’Connell hoists Nottingham Challenger trophy

Christopher O’Connell has claimed the Challenger title in Nottingham, his first professional singles title on grass and a timely boost ahead of Wimbledon qualifying.

Christopher O’Connell has capped a resurgent week in Nottingham by winning his first professional singles title on grass.

The 32-year-old Australian maintained his composure against a persistent Otto Virtanen to win 7-6(3) 7-6(6), his first singles title since September 2024.

O’Connell entered the Nottingham Challenger on a seven-match losing streak but found his groove on the grass, surrendering only one set throughout the week.

 

Having surged 31 places to world No.123, O’Connell heads to Roehampton full of confidence where he will attempt to qualify for Wimbledon for the second time, after 2021.

He also reached the third round of the Wimbledon main draw in 2023.

This week's other most outstanding performers include:

Matthew Dellavedova: In Maanshan, China, the 26-year-old won his fourth straight ITF title in the past four weeks. Dellavedova has won 35 consecutive sets and is nearing a return to the world’s top 350. 

Jake Delaney: Delaney won his third ITF singles title of the season in Tokyo, winning the M15 crown without losing a set. He also reached the doubles final alongside Shunsuke Nakagawa.

Rinky Hijikata: A qualifier at Queen’s Club, Hijikata won through to the quarterfinals of the main draw, beating defending champion and No.2 seed Jiri Lehecka along the way. Hijikata is 7-3 on grass in 2026.

Alex de Minaur: De Minaur also reached the quarterfinals at Queen’s, continuing an excellent grasscourt season during which he progressed to the s-Hertogenbosch final.

Talia Gibson: The West Australian notched her first tour-level quarterfinal on grass at the WTA tournament in Nottingham, beating Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen before exiting to former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova. 

John Peers: The 37-year-old came through doubles qualifying with Robert Galloway to advance to the semifinals of the ATP 500 grasscourt event in Halle, Germany. 

Elena Micic: Playing alongside former doubles world No.1 Kristina Mladenovic, Micic advanced to the biggest doubles final of her career at the WTA 125 event in Figueira da Foz Open, Portugal.

Patrick Harper & Blake Balydon: The Aussie duo won through to the doubles semifinals of the inaugural grasscourt Challenger event in Dublin, Ireland, ultimately losing 12-10 in a match tiebreak to Brits Mark Whitehouse and James MacKinlay.

Max Purcell: In his first event back after suspension, Purcell won the M15 doubles title in Tokyo with Yusuke Kusuhara, after also reaching the quarterfinals in the singles event. 

Tai Sach: Also in Tokyo, 23-year-old Sach advanced to the singles quarterfinals, his fifth ITF quarterfinal of 2026. 

Moerani Bouzige: Bouzige was a singles quarterfinalist at the ITF tournament in Maanshan, improving his win-loss record this season to 26-17. 

Joshua Charlton: Partnering Kazakh Grigoriy Lomakin, Charlton won the doubles title in Maanshan, his second straight trophy in the Chinese city and fourth doubles crown of 2026. 

Lily Fairclough: 20-year-old Fairclough combined with American Kate Fakih to win the W15 doubles title in Irvine, California – the eighth of her career and first of 2026.

Brandon Walkin: At the M15 tournament in Kursumlijska Banja, Serbia, Walkin progressed to the doubles final, meaning he has won eight of his past 10 matches on the ITF tour. 

Amy Stevens: Stevens reached the doubles semifinals in San Gregorio, Italy with China’s Zhang Ruien to improve her doubles record to 14-8 this year.
