December Showdown

Each December the country’s best players assemble at Melbourne Park for the December Showdown. In 16 days, more than 1500 matches will be played to find out who is the best player across each age group and spectator entry is free!

The Australian Open Play-off is the centre-piece of the December Showdown. The play-off sees players from around Australia battle it out for a golden ticket into the Australian Open.

  • 5 x State / Territory Positions – ACT (1), TAS (1), NT (1), Next Best ACT/TAS/NT (2)**
  • 16 x International Wildcard Invitations

Girls

  • 20 x Direct Acceptances (based on the latest AR as of October 23, 2020)
  • 3 x Winners of the 12s singles events at the Victorian, New South Wales and Queensland State Championships*
  • 20 x State Qualifier Positions – VIC (4), QLD (4), NSW (4), SA (4), WA (4)**
  • 5 x State / Territory Positions – ACT (2), TAS(2), NT (1), Next Best ACT/TAS/NT (2)**
  • 16 x International Wildcard Invitations

* Winners of the 12s, 14s & 16s Singles events at the Victorian, Queensland, and New South Wales State Championships can only gain a place in the equivalent age group at the December Showdown and must be of eligible age as of 31st December 2020.  If winners are also direct acceptances, or no longer age eligible, the positions will revert to an invitation to the next highest eligible player on the Australian Rankings.

State Qualifier and State/Territory Positions

State Qualifiers have been decided as closed state qualifying events:

  • Western Australia – To Be Confirmed
  • New South Wales & ACT – To Be Confirmed
  • Queensland & NT – To Be Confirmed
  • Victoria & TAS – To Be Confirmed
  • South Australia – To Be Confirmed

These closed state qualifying events do not offer AR points or doubles or consolation events.  Victoria/Tasmania, New South Wales/ACT and Queensland/NT will offer draw sizes of up to 64 players, while South Australia and Western Australia offered draw sizes of up to 32 players into their state qualifying events.  Athletes will only be permitted to compete in their state of residency.

Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and Northern Territory will also have allocated wildcards into the 12/u & 14/u Australian Championships,  to be awarded by the relevant National Academy head coach.
