Lindsay Chicken - Moranbah Tennis Association

How are you currently involved in the tennis community?

Lindsay is heavily involved with the Moranbah Tennis Association, where he helps manage and grow tennis opportunities within the local community. His role includes organising Tuesday night social tennis and pickleball, coordinating coaching clinics, applying for grants, organising maintenance and helping oversee the day-to-day running of the club.

Recently, Lindsay secured additional funding that will help resurface all six courts at the association. Three courts are funded through a community gaming grant, one through Anglo American, and additional grant applications are currently pending. If required, the association will contribute remaining funds to ensure the entire project is completed.

Lindsay has also helped organise coaching visits from coaches, including Michael and Bill McDonald, with grant funding assisting to subsidise coaching programs for the Moranbah community. He is also the Treasure for the North Regional Assembly and does a fantastic job.

How long have you been a volunteer in tennis and what keeps you coming back?

Lindsay has been volunteering in tennis since around 2016, giving close to ten years of service to the local tennis community. What keeps him involved is his passion for ensuring tennis continues to thrive in Moranbah.

Initially, he simply wanted somewhere to play, but quickly realised that without volunteers stepping up, there may not be tennis opportunities available in town at all.

Over time, more people have become involved, helping share the workload and strengthen the community around the sport. Seeing the club continue to grow and provide opportunities for people to play is what motivates him to keep coming back.

What do you love most about tennis?

For Lindsay, tennis is all about staying fit, healthy and active for life. He believes racquet sports play an important role in maintaining coordination, movement and overall wellbeing, particularly as people get older. He also sees this as one of the reasons sports like pickleball are becoming increasingly popular – they keep people moving, connected and engaged in the community.

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

The most rewarding part for Lindsay is seeing the club continue to operate and knowing the community still has a place to come together and play. Many small-town clubs have disappeared over the years, so helping keep tennis alive in Moranbah and seeing people enjoying the sport makes the hard work worthwhile.

Is there a moment, event or person that has really stuck with you throughout your journey?

Lindsay says his family, particularly his wife, have been his biggest support throughout his volunteering journey. She also contributes significantly to the club by helping organise activities such as yoga, Pilates and fitness classes through the clubhouse, helping create a broader community hub around the Moranbah Tennis Association. Their shared commitment and support have played a major role in helping the club continue to grow and succeed.
