The 2024 WCI quarterfinalist Maya Joint took on the most talked about star heading into Wimbledon, seven-time champion Serena Williams. The 20-year-old Australian rose to the challenge in brilliant fashion, defeating Williams 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
Maya now moves to the 2nd round where she will face Alexandra Eala who herself is a Canberra international Alumni. Eala is in full swing on the grass courts after winning the Birmingham Open and defeating Elina Svitoline (No. 8) and Elena Rybakina (No. 2) at the Halle open. Eala has risen to world No. 32 and hit a career high of No. 29 in March.
Joint and Eala are among the many Workday Canberra International (WCI) alumni who are set to hit the grass courts at Wimbledon. Rising stars such as Joao Fonseca, Rafael Jodar, and Katie Boulter will all look to make their mark at the tournament.
Last month's French open saw many former WCI stars shine throughout the tournament, including WCI finalist Jakub Mensik, who made the semifinal. Mensik achieved this success after defeating the 2025 WCI winner Joao Fonseca at the French Open. Mensik would go on to lose to eventual tournament winner Alexander Zverev in the Semi Final, but it was still a breakout tournament for the Czech star.
Rafael Jodar made a strong start at Wimbledon, dispatching Englishman Felix Gill in straight sets. The fast start comes after Jodar made it to the quarter finals at Roland Garros. The challenge for Jodar will be adapting his clay court playstyle to the grass of Wimbledon. Jodar has been on a meteoric rise since his time in Canberra and now sits at No.23 on the ATP rankings.
Joao Fonseca (2025 WCI winner) has gone from strength to strength, finding form on the grass after making it to the doubles final at the Halle Open alongside Daniel Altmaier. Fonseca also had his best grand slam performance on the clay of Roland Garros where he defeated seven-time Wimbledon Champion Novak Djokovic (world No.4) to make his way to the quarter finals.
