Honouring Ken McGregor
About Ken McGregor
Ken McGregor was a dominant figure in Australian tennis during the early 1950s, both for his achievements in singles and as half of one of the greatest men’s doubles partnerships in history alongside Frank Sedgman.
Born in Adelaide in 1929, McGregor was a nine-time major champion, including winning a calendar Grand Slam with Sedgman in 1951 – a feat which hasn’t been repeated in men’s doubles to this day.
The pair nearly went back-to-back in 1952, winning three of the “big four” except the US Open, where a loss in the final ended their record streak of seven consecutive major titles.
About the Ken McGregor Fund (KMF)
In recognition of McGregor’s contribution to the sport, Tennis SA established a fund in his name to help the next generation of international players and players with a disability.
Since its inception in 2009, the Ken McGregor Fund (KMF) has provided over $150,000 in support to more than 65 competitors, including players such as Thanasi Kokkinakis, Brad Mousley, Henry De Cure and Petra Hule.
The KMF Charter
The KMF is guided by three pillars as per the Charter:
- Development - To support the development of South Australia’s emerging tennis players.
- Tradition - To provide the necessary resources to continue our proud tennis tradition.
- Opportunities - To support and provide tennis opportunities for people with a disability.
The KMF’s committee comprises up to 11 members, one of which is allocated to a member of the McGregor family.
The Tennis SA board has ultimate discretion over the fund’s committee and its composition. The board appoints the chair and up to seven members.
The KMF reviews the Charter annually.

Ken McGregor funding
Support has previously been by way of individual applications for high performance athletes and athletes with a disability.
In 2024, it changed the way it supports players. Individual applications for funding have ceased, instead replaced with KMF Scholarships which will be awarded annually.
The number of scholarships and the amount provided will be determined annually by the KMF.
In addition, the KMF will support the annual State Team Events by subsidising costs for selected players.
Award recipients
Congratulations to our successful player and event recipients.
