CLUBS OF THE MONTH

The Dover Square Tennis Club continues to grow in membership and prides itself on its family friendly culture.

Having four courts at its South Brighton home base, they punch above their weight when it comes to participation in the association competitions.

Their awesome club coach Gen Dawson has very popular Hot Shots and Match Play programs which are providing a great pathway to competition tennis.

After years of fundraising, planning and applying for grants, the club will soon have two, fully rebuilt courts and LED lighting for all four courts.

This will provide them with the opportunity to provide more court time and create some fun social nights.

Dover Square would like to acknowledge and send a massive thanks to the City of Holdfast Bay and the Federal & State Governments for their assistance in bringing this project to fruition.

Also, the Club marks its 90th anniversary this year and is planning a major event to celebrate the milestone with more to be announced shortly.

Congratulations Dover Square Tennis Club!

Mannum Tennis Club is located along the Murray River and is approximately 100 km from the CBD. The club has 6 courts under lights allowing for competition, coaching and social play throughout the year.

The club welcomes all players from the local community and is looking to provide players of all abilities with an avenue to participate and improve on their skills. Mannum Tennis Club works closely with the local community including the local school to help introduce new players to the sport with an emphasis on creating a positive and fun environment.

The club has continued to grow since coming close to folding in 2020 entering teams at both senior and junior levels in the Lower Murray Hardcourt Tennis Association. Behind the scenes the club’s incredibly dedicated committee has worked tirelessly to revitalise the club and continuing to grow its profile in the local community.

Congratulations Mannum Tennis Club!

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

West Beach/Xavier Lawn Tennis Club stalwart Peter Clark is certainly a quiet achiever.

At the Club’s recent AGM, he was bestowed the honour of life membership following a successful tennis playing career dating back many years under the former SA Catholic Lawn Tennis Association (which incidentally celebrates its 100th anniversary this year).

Peter was a member of the former Plympton Catholic Tennis Club from 1971, formed from the Plympton YCW, and played most of his tennis in the Catholic Association which was famed for its strong competition.

It wasn’t until 1979 that he joined up at West Beach playing in its thriving and competitive doubles night competition run by former members Bruce and Raylene Trestrail.

Peter has been playing in the SMMLTA doubles competition for Xavier since the 2014/2015 season.

“It’s a fantastic honour. But, I feel that I really don’t deserve these things,” said Peter in recognition of his life membership.

“I still enjoy playing night tennis after all these years and I want to keep playing. So, sometimes you need to be selfish to keep yourself going.”

A long time supporter of night tennis at the Club, Peter took over from Bruce in 2010 and, with member Peter Nelligan, have continued to support and run this competition at its West Beach Headquarters.

Peter was officially installed with life membership at the Club’s AGM on Monday 15 August 2022.

Congratulations Peter!

Peter Eckert has been the Club Coach of the Mannum Tennis Club for the past 2 years. He currently hosts coaching on Wednesday nights from Hot Shots through to Senior training. He also plays in the Friday Night Seniors competition in the Lower Murray Hardcourt Tennis Association.

As coach Peter is on the front foot trying to attract new players to the club as well as providing them with opportunity to develop their skills. Whether repairing nets or creating fence signage Peter has been very proactive in promoting tennis throughout Mannum all with the goal of making the sport as fun and accessible as possible.

Peter’s favourite aspect of being involved with the club is the opportunity to work with enthusiastic and likeminded people with the shared goal of helping grow the club as well as tennis as a whole in the region.

Congratulations Peter!
