Getting Classified

Have a Hearing Test (Audiogram)
  • You’ll need a recent audiogram from a qualified audiologist showing your hearing levels. This test measures your hearing loss and is essential for classification.
  • If you don’t already have one, make an appointment with your audiologist (for example at Australian Hearing) and request a copy of your audiogram.
Complete the Deaf Sports Australia Classification Form
  • Go to the classification page on the Deaf Sports Australia website and fill in the online form.
  • Attach a copy of your audiogram with the form, including details of your average hearing loss (3FAHL) in both ears.
Submit Your Application
  • Send your completed form and audiogram to Deaf Sports Australia. Once received, they forward your audiogram to their audiologist for assessment.
Receive Your Classification Letter
  • Deaf Sports Australia will assess your eligibility and send you an official classification letter. This document confirms your hearing-loss category and can be used when entering competitions.
Notify Tennis Officials (if required)
  • Once you receive your classification letter, you may be asked to inform Tennis NSW or Tennis Australia so your eligibility can be confirmed for DHoH-specific events.

What you need to know

Registration – Most DHoH events open entries several weeks before the start date, and players can register via the Tennis NSW or Tennis Australia tournament portals.

Classification – Some sanctioned DHoH tournaments require official hearing-loss classification through Deaf Sports Australia. Players may need to provide a classification letter when entering eligible events.

Event Formats – Events may include singles and doubles draws and follow standard tennis rules, with communication adaptations such as visual start signals and accessible officiating.

Communication Supports – Players should advise organisers of their communication preferences (e.g. Auslan, lip-reading, visual cues) prior to the event to ensure appropriate supports are in place.

Support & Contacts – For entry questions, contact the event organiser listed on the tournament page or reach out to Tennis NSW Inclusion & Diversity staff for guidance.
