Information for Clubs & Coaches
Tennis NSW supports clubs and coaches to deliver inclusive Deaf Hard of Hearing (DHOH) tennis experiences by providing practical information, resources and connections.
Integrating DHOH Tennis into your Club Programs
Clubs can make Deaf & Hard of Hearing (DHoH) Tennis part of their regular programming without needing separate facilities or significant additional resources. With simple communication adaptations, DHoH tennis can be integrated into existing sessions, ensuring programs remain inclusive, sustainable, and connected to the broader club community rather than operating as a standalone offering.
- Schedule regular sessions: Integrate DHoH players into existing junior, social, or all-abilities programs. Consistency — even a 30–60 minute weekly or fortnightly session – helps build confidence and routine.
- Use visual communication supports: Incorporate visual start signals, clear hand signals, written instructions, and demonstration-first coaching within standard sessions.
- Inclusive group lessons: Include DHoH players in beginner clinics or social programs, ensuring coaches maintain clear line-of-sight and adapt communication methods where needed.
- Communication planning: Establish preferred communication methods (e.g. Auslan, lip-reading, visual cues) before sessions or competitions to support smooth participation.
- Buddy or peer support: Pair new DHoH participants with experienced players or volunteers to help navigate sessions and build confidence.
- Connect to pathways: Link club sessions to DHoH events, development programs, and classification opportunities to provide clear progression from recreational play to competitive pathways.
