A project to increase tennis participation at Parramatta City Tennis Club can now commence, thanks to a grant of $200,000 from the NSW State Government’s My Community Project.

The project will see six courts resurfaced as part of this 17 court facility at PH Jeffery Reserve, allowing the local community and school to continue playing tennis seven days a week.

Its success was dependent on community votes and a partnership approach with City of Parramatta Council to develop a long-term strategy for the site, which will align with community priorities, through improved programming and sustainable operation.

Acting Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee, attended the venue with City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer to congratulate the club and council on Friday 18 October 2019.

Denzil Campbell, President at Parramatta City Tennis Club said “we are grateful for the community support and funding, so we can continue to grow grassroots tennis through providing more opportunities to play tennis and enable the centre to achieve its full potential.”

Tennis NSW Regional Tennis Manager, Gavin Cowan states “this centre provides important local opportunities but is also an important district level facility for tennis. It is in need of vital improvements and the funding comes at a time when there are significant opportunities within Parramatta to serve a growing and diverse community.”

The City of Parramatta is participating in Tennis Restart, which is encouraging positive engagement between council, clubs and Tennis NSW in the planning and achievement of busy and sustainable facilities. The Council also recently invested in the resurfacing of six other courts at Parramatta City Tennis Club and is delivering accessibility upgrades at a number of other tennis venues throughout the local government area. The partnership approach continues to be critical to future investment.

The NSW Government is investing $24.7 million in 248 projects across NSW to help improve the wellbeing of the people and communities that live there.
Up to $260,000 of funding was available to each electorate, with grants of between $20,000 and $200,000 being awarded to the projects that received the most support via community votes.
Parramatta City Tennis Club was on of four tennis venues across NSW to receive funding through My Community Project. Others included:
  • Canoon Road Sporting Complex in the Ku-Ring-Gai electorate – lighting project awarded $200,000
  • Petersham Public School in the Summer Hill electorate – multi-sport community project awarded $40,000
  • West Tamworth Tennis Club in the Tamworth electorate – social inclusion for tennis and table tennis project awarded $100,060
