Getting Classified
To compete in PWII (Players With Intellectual Impairments) tennis events, players need to be officially classified so they compete in the right category and enjoy fair, supportive competition. The process is managed in Australia by Sport Inclusion Australia, following internationally recognised criteria set by Virtus, the global governing body for athletes with intellectual impairment.
- Check Eligibility:
Complete an eligibility application with Sport Inclusion Australia to confirm you meet the criteria for one of the three PWII classes (II‑1: intellectual disability, II‑2: significant additional impairment like Down syndrome, II‑3: autism). This often requires documentation such as diagnostic reports, IQ score, and evidence of adaptive behaviour limits. - Submit Application:
Visit the Sport Inclusion Australia Eligibility page HERE to download forms and submit your application at least 3 months before you plan to enter a competition. - Assessment & Approval:
Sport Inclusion Australia reviews your documents and confirms your classification. Once approved, your name is added to the official Masterlist of eligible athletes, which events use to verify entries. - International Eligibility (if needed):
If you want to compete internationally, Sport Inclusion Australia can help forward your application to Virtus for global recognition.
Important:
- Classification is only required for official tournaments and ranking events — it’s not needed for social or club play.
- Keep your eligibility up to date by renewing with Sport Inclusion Australia when required
