Redeemer Baptist School is set to welcome tennis legend Ash Barty in Term 4, after being crowned the inaugural Ash Barty Schools Challenge winners.
The national initiative attracted entries from more than 100 primary schools across Australia, each eager to participate in the program created by three-time Grand Slam champion Ash Barty to inspire children to get active, have fun and develop a love for tennis.
Schools were invited to submit photos or videos showcasing how students were embracing tennis through skill activities, team challenges and creative racquet games. Redeemer Baptist School impressed the judging panel with its energetic and engaging submission, featuring students from across the school taking part.
As the winning school, Redeemer Baptist will receive a special visit from Ash Barty in Term 4, where students will have the opportunity to meet the former world No.1 and even rally with her on court. The school will also receive a collection of Little Ash books for classrooms and the school library.
Ash said she was thrilled by the creativity and enthusiasm schools showed throughout the challenge.
“This challenge was all about encouraging kids to be active and enjoy tennis in a fun way,” said Ash Barty.
“It was incredible to see so many schools get involved and embrace the spirit of the program. Congratulations to Redeemer Baptist School — I’m really looking forward to visiting and having a hit with the students!”
Redeemer Baptist School Principal Jonathan Cannon said the program strongly aligned with the school’s values around health, sport and community participation.
“We were delighted to participate in the Ash Barty Schools Challenge. It brought our students together through sport, teamwork and healthy activity,” he said.
“With 32% of our K–6 students already involved in after-school tennis coaching, the chance to welcome Ash — an Australian sporting icon and children’s author — is truly inspiring. Her visit will no doubt encourage even more students to pick up a racquet.”
Ash Barty will visit Redeemer Baptist School later this term, giving students an opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s most admired athletes both on and off the court.
