Four Tennis NSW Award Winners are set as finalists for the upcoming 2019 Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards, following the announcement earlier today.

The annual awards evening will take place on Monday 2 December, at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne, recognizing the outstanding achievements and contributions of the tennis community. The Newcombe Medal is the highest distinction at the Australian Tennis Awards, in it’s 10th year running.

New South Wales is set to be represented in four out of fourteen categories.

Mathew McAleer has been nominated for Excellence in Officiating. In 2019 Mathew was selected as Chair Umpire, Line Umpire and Review Official at various international and grand slam tournaments including the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Another successful individual on the rise is Rinky Hijikata, nominated for Junior Male Athlete of the year. Rinky has enjoyed great success on the ITF Junior Circuit this year playing all four Junior Grand Slam events. His year has been highlighted by representing Australia and winning a silver medal in doubles at the Youth Olympics Games in Argentina.

Kelly Wren is a strong contender as Most Outstanding Player with a Disability. Kelly won the Ladies Singles event at the Australian Tennis Championships and has done so for 22 consecutive years.

Mary baker has been nominated as the Volunteer of the Year with her 10 years of active service as a committee member of Eastwood Thornleigh District Tennis Club. Recently as President of the club, Mary was instrumental in securing an $184,000 community sport infrastructure grant, which allowed upgrades to the facilities that have been untouched for many years.

Tennis New South Wales would like to wish all four individuals the best of luck in the upcoming awards ceremony for their hard work, determination and passion for the sport.
