Tennis Australia has today announced that all proceeds from Thursday’s ticket sales for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group quarterfinal tie against the United States will be donated to victims of Cyclone Debbie.

All funds raised will go to the Australian Red Cross’ Disaster Relief and Recovery fund, which is providing valuable support for Emergency Services teams working in the communities devastated by the ex-tropical cyclone.

“This is a great opportunity not only to come and support our boys, but also to give back to the victims of Cyclone Debbie who have suffered terrible loss and damage to their homes and livelihoods,” said Australia’s Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt.

“While we’ll be doing our best to win the tie, events like this put things into perspective and we hope the funds raised can help people start to rebuild their lives.”

Tennis Queensland and Tennis NSW have also agreed to match the funds raised through tomorrow’s ticket sales, with those proceeds going towards the 20-plus tennis clubs across the region which have suffered extensive structural damage.

“It’s the least we can do to help our clubs, which are the life-blood of our sport and at the heart of every tennis community,” said Mark Bloomfield, President of Tennis Queensland.

“We’re hearing reports of devastating damage, with clubhouses inundated with water, fences washed away, and courts suffering extensively,” he added.

“We’re pleased that we can, even in a small way, provide some much-needed assistance and support to those clubs in NSW that have been devastated by the floods,” said Alistair McDonald, CEO of Tennis NSW.

“Tennis is an incredibly tight-knit community, and I know that the clubs and centres affected will rally together.”
