Day 5 wraps-up and we’re at the tail end of the tournament! Plenty of stellar matches taking place, with local heroes and international rising stars getting closer to becoming Champion.
Both defending singles champions, Aussies Rinky Hijikata and Maddison Inglis, have cruised through to the quarterfinals after they were victorious in straight sets.
James McCabe got through in two, knocking out fellow Aussie Marc Polmans in a bid to inch closer to the finals. Qualifier Carl Emil Overbeck (DEN) caused an upset following his victory over No.5 seed Jason Kubler (AUS).
The first men’s doubles match of the day saw Aussie duo Calum Puttergill and Dane Sweeny get it done in three sets. Japanese pairing Taisei Ichikawa / Shinji Hazawa have also advanced to the next round, accompanied by Aussie duo Jake Delaney and Adelaide’s own Li Tu. The final doubles match-up of the day saw Anirudh Chandrasekar / Reese Stalder take the win in less than an hour.
Talia Gibson (AUS) progressed through to the quarterfinals following her 6-1 6-2 victory in just over an hour. Joining her are fellow Australians Taylah Preston, Elena Micic and Emerson Jones who also came out on top today.
China’s Sijia Wei and Fangran Tian both moved through to the next round, alongside Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva following her 6-1 6-3 win.
In the women’s doubles, Aussie duo Maddison Inglis and Talia Gibson advanced through following a 6-4 6-2 win, alongside another Australian pairing consisting of Elena Micic and Adelaide’s own Petra Hule. Korean pair Eunhye Lee / Dayeon Back surpassed the Aussies in 43 minutes winning 6-0 6-1. The last match of the saw doubles Sijia Wei (CHN) / Ikumi Yamazaki (JPN) end with a victory.
Day 6 is just around the corner, with quarterfinals matches for the men’s and women’s singles, and semifinals day for the doubles!
