The 2013 Tennis SA Queens Birthday Championship (QBC) was held from 7-10 June at the iconic Memorial Drive Tennis Centre with a total of $7,500 up for grabs in prize money. The event attracted some of the best players from across South Australia and Australia.

The Men’s Draw was headlined by Number one seed Lawrence Bataljin along with a host of South Aussies returning from College for their Summer break including Carl Alberton, Stefan Szacinski and Nathan Eshmade.

In the Women’s draw local girl Nicole Collie was the no. On1seed in what was a strong field including last year QBC winner Amy Sneath and promising junior Petra Hule.

Played in surprisingly good conditions for June ,the Men’s singles Championship proved to have a number of upsets early on with No. 1 see Bataljin going down to John Hall in the first round and Kurtis Wilson beating number 2 seed Li Tu in the Quarter Finals.  Making it through to final were Japanese young gun Yuya Ito and returning College player Szacinski. In a match that lasted over two hours Szacinski overcame the Japanese youngster Ito 4-6 6-1 6-3 to claim his first Queens Birthday Championship.

The Women’s singles draw also provided some upsets with no.1 seed Collie going down to teenager Madison Frahn in the Quarter Finals while No. 2 seed Alexandra Walters lost to the unseeded Olivia Ley in round two.

Frahn managed to make her way to the final after her early upset win where she met defending champion Amy Sneath, Sneath proved too strong for Frahn taking out her second Championship in a row with a resounding 6-3 6-3 win.

In the Men’s Doubles Simon Bates and John Hall overcame Carl Alberton and Asyraf Azhar while in the women’s doubles : Collie and Nicole Kraemer were too strong for Sneath and Walters.
