Australia’s Matthew Barton has won the inaugural Charles Sturt Adelaide International defeating Great Britain’s James Ward in straight sets 6-2 6-3 in the final at West Lakes Tennis Club today.

Playing in his first ever Challenger final Barton played with remarkable composure in front of the 500 plus crowd continually putting Ward on the back foot with his punishing first serve and lethal forehand.  The win will take Barton from outside the top 300 in the world to the 230’s in the ATP world rankings.

For Ward it was a disappointing finish to a great week in which he made his way through to the final in impressive fashion, Ward will also rise up the ATP world rankings and will leave West Lakes with considerable confidence after making the final.

In the doubles, Australian pair Sam Groth and Matt Reid defeated Greg Jones and James Duckworth in an all Aussie match-up. In what was a re-match of the first round at last week’s Burnie International, Groth and Reid proved too strong again for the combination of Duckworth and Jones.

For Groth it was his 7th career Challenger win in the doubles while it was Reid’s first ever Challenger win.

Congratulations to the West Lakes Tennis Club for what was a magnificent week of International Tennis, the week could not have been the success it was without the support of major Sponsors Epic Storage and the City of Charles Sturt.

The Charles Sturt Adelaide International is one of three ATP Challenger events on the 2013 Australian Pro Tour, a series of professional tennis events that bridge junior events and the ATP/WTA Tour, providing players with the opportunity to earn their first world ranking points.
