26 November 2020 | Tennis SA

Firstly, I want to thank you for your patience while we worked with SAPOL and SA Health to clarify the COVID-19 restrictions affecting our sport.

Today we received some good news from the SAPOL Covid 19 Coordination Group as a result of our continued advocacy.

Please see full advice below:

SAPOL Covid 19 Coordination Group to Tennis SA CEO Debbie Sterrey – Thursday 26 November 2020

A meeting was held this morning between SAPOL and SA Health regarding coaching of tennis.

Previous advice to Tennis SA from SA Health was that coaching of tennis was not permitted.

I can confirm today this advice has been updated, endorsed by both SAPOL and SA Health, permitting 1 on 1 coaching.

Further to this I confirm SA Health previous advice that group coaching is not permitted.

In respect of cardio tennis sessions this is only permitted if fitness based. Training sessions are not permitted.

Can you please advise all interested parties of this update.

The following is the updated list of permitted tennis activities:

  • 1 on 1 private coaching
  • Cardio Tennis sessions (fitness based)
  • Tennis courts open for a casual hit between mates as a recreational activity (not a club planned activity)
  • Indoor meetings (contact tracing records required)

All activities are subject to the density requirement (one person per 4 square metres) and physical distancing principle (1.5 metres between people), as well as our Community Tennis Guidelines (available here).

Clubs must have a COVID Marshal in attendance at any times of expected high traffic, including times of planned activities.

Not permitted

  • All other forms of tennis coaching, excluding 1 on 1 private coaching and Cardio Tennis
  • Club organised trainings, competitions and events (including, but not restricted to the following: planned club trainings, internal club social tennis competitions, inter club competitions, club tournaments)

As we stated yesterday, it is important that our tennis community works together to ensure we get the best outcomes. We understand that this has been a very difficult situation for all involved and I wish to acknowledge the work our team has done to ensure that coaches (and players) could return to tennis courts around the state as soon as possible.

On behalf of the team at Tennis SA, I want to again thank you for your patience while we worked with both SAPOL and SA Health to make this positive step forward today.
