Adelaide brought the most miserable weather for the final day of the 2018 12/u and 14/u Australian Grasscourt Championships, but the singles champions have been crowned!

In the all-South Aussie 14-and-under boys final, [4] Edward Winter took the first set comfortably six games to two against [2] Edward Vo, but Vo then steadied the ship to take the second set six games to three. The match was tight, but we never could have predicted what would happen next. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as both players were forced to save multiple match points, before Vo took the final point to win the tiebreak 18-16 and claim the 14-and-under boys’ championship.

Top seed Taylah Lawless (NSW) had a relatively straightforward victory over seventh seed Jessica-Jade Haylo (Qld) 6-1 6-1 to claim the 14-and-under girls’ title, while [1] Sarah Rokusek (NSW) found herself in an epic battle against Baihe (Lily) Lin (NSW) before she won the 12-and-under girls’ championship, 5-7 7-5 [10-5].

The 12-and-under boys was another tight encounter. Second seed Jeremy Zhang (NSW) took the first set 6-2, before top seed Mudiwa Munyimani (Vic) came back to take the second set 6-4. Munyimani held on to take the match tiebreak 10-8 and take home the 12-and-under boys’ title.

So as the sun sets over the 2018 12/u and 14/u Australian Grasscourt Championships for the last time, we would like to say a huge thank you to all of the athletes, parents, grandparents, relatives and coaches for being a part of the tournament.

We would also like to thank the Kensington Gardens Bowling and Tennis Club for all of their efforts in the lead up to and during this week. A special thank you must go to President, Neil Jones and the number of volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure that the tournament was a huge success.

Thank you also to our Tournament Director Francis Soyer, Tournament Referee Stuart Nancarrow, Chief of Officials Kirsty Marnane, Physiotherapists Jennifer Laver Scott and Andrew Hopkins, and to all of the Chair Umpires, Court Supervisors and Line Umpires who have worked the event.
