Last Friday night, Tennis SA hosted the Tennis SA Junior Award Presentations and the Tennis SA Junior State League Grand Final.
Two players stood out from their peers to win the Junior State League Player of the Year award. Heidi Evans from Happy Valley was awarded the Female Player of the Year and Olley Douglas from Coromandel Valley was awarded the Male Player of the Year.
At the conclusion of the presentation, players hit the court for the national anthem before commencing play.
In the Girl’s Competition, Seacliff had all the pressure on them not losing a match all season as their opponents had nothing to lose based on past results. Peake Gardens number one Amber Marshall hit the court for her first single of the season against Charlotte Kempaners-pocz. Marshall showed no nerves putting on a dominant display beating Kempaners-Pocz 9-1.
Peake Gardens Meeka Marshall and Mia Tsoukalas also put on similar performances to their team mate winning at number two and four.
Seacliff’s Cydney Crumbie was the last single remaining at number three and had everything left on her shoulders to keep the match alive. Crumbie grinded it out against a tough opponent in Hayley Waterman winning 9-5. Unfortunately Crumbie was unable to win by a big enough margin awarding Peake Gardens the win as Seacliff would not be able to catch Peake Gardens on games, officially declaring them the winners of the Junior State League title for 2017/18.
In the Boy’s Competition Coromandel Valley had yet again a big out in number one and Player of the Year Olley Douglas. With Coromandel Valley’s strong depth they believed they would be able to yet again cover his absence and win their second final.
Sean Van Rensburg moved into position one facing Seacliff’s Stefan Bianchet. Van Rensburg showed experience being on the big stage previously giving him that edge which allowed him to take the first rubber 9-2.
In similar fashion Coromandel Valley’s number two and three were able to keep it going as Coromandel Valley’s Sam the Glue Sanderson and Patrick Douglas both won their singles respectively.
Coromandel Valley’s number four Luke Mascione came out looking to redeem himself in singles after a loss in last year’s final. Mascione’s opponent Lachlan Brain wasn’t going down without a fight. With both players, playing at the top of their game it was Mascione who came out on top by a whisker winning the set 9-7.
Coromandel Valley closed out all four singles, putting themselves in an un-defeatable position which saw them reclaim the Junior State league title and setting yet another record for the books.
