The Junior State League Preliminary Finals were competed for that last ticket into the Grand Final. Seacliff Girls and Coromandel Valley boys had already won their spot into the Junior State League Final and waited to see who their competition would be.
In the Girl’s Competition, Peake Gardens-Riverside who won their way through to the Preliminary Final, travelled to Goodwood who lost to Seacliff. Goodwood have been the second best team all season and looked to defend their premiership title.
Peake Gardens-Riverside had finished the season just behind Goodwood with a win against them in the last round of the regular season and looked to replicate it again in the Preliminary Final.
With Peake Gardens-Riverside team lead by Meeka Marshall and followed by Hayley Waterman, Mia Tsoukalas and Ashlee Shields. The team only dropped one set giving the team a five rubbers to one victory. It was the Peake Gardens-Riverside doubles combinations that shone through winning both in ta tie break.
Peak Gardens-Riverside will now prepare themselves for Seacliff which hopes to be an epic battle.
In the Boy’s Competition, Trinity Gardens hosted Seacliff who were looking to overcome a Trinity team that had been sitting in second place for majority of the season. Trinity Gardens were weakened by the absence of their top player Jared Waterman.
Seacliff’s number one Stefan Bianchet kicked things off against Trinity Gardens Callum Gale, Bianchet kept his composure and showed why he is one of the league’s top ten players winning 9-5.
Trinity Gardens number two Hendrik Grohbruegge had a tough opponent in Anton Talladira who he defeated 9-6. This was then followed by another win for Trinity Gardens in an epic battle by Cooper Asquith winning 9-8. Seacliff’s Noah Koeroessy tied rubbers up when he defeated Luka Ilic 9-3.
In the doubles, Trinity Gardens Callum Gale and Hendrik Grohbruegge paired up in the top doubles against Stefan Bianchet and Noah Koeroessy winning in a tight contest that came down to a tiebreak. This left the result of the match up to the bottom doubles. Seacliff’s Anton Talladira and Lachlan Brain paired up against Cooper Asquith and Luka Ilic. Talladira and Brain were able to hold their nerves which saw Seacliff winning 6-3 and giving the team a three rubbers all, 44 to 36 games win to go in the record books.
Seacliff now knocking off two teams in the finals, they will look to achieve the biggest upset of the season in trying to defeat Coromandel Valley.
Finals will be held at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre on Friday 23 March at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend and spectate, particularly for the Junior Award Presentations, which will occur prior to the Grand Final matches at 6.15pm.
