South Australia’s Amber Marshall is the last Australian standing in the Girls’ singles draw at the Australian Open following second round action today.

Making her junior major singles debut, Marshall started her week with a 6-1 7-6(6) win over fourteenth seed Qinwen Zheng (CHN) on Sunday.

Marshall then backed up this performance, with a convincing victory over Russia’s Alina Charaeva 6-2 6-4 in just 52 minutes this morning.

“I thought I started off pretty slow, but the girl started mixing it up and playing a few drop shots and slices. The ball was coming differently at me but I thought that I adjusted to it well and started to play a bit better.”

Marshall is set to hit Show Court 2 in the second match tomorrow, taking on an unfamiliar opponent in Dalayna Hewitt (USA) for a place in the quarterfinals.

“I am hoping that I can just play my best and enjoy myself and get the most out of it, no matter what the result is.”
