The State League season is tightening up with a number of close matches played across Round 12.

In the men’s competition Collingrove won a thriller over Broadview to move to the top of the State League table. Collingrove number one Sean Page had a three set win over Martin Richards to get his team off to a strong start. Broadview youngster Kurtis Wilson was able to get his team going with a tight win over Collingrove Captain Matt Teivans. Heading in to the doubles at two rubbers all it was the Collingrove pairing of Page and Teivans at top doubles who were able to clinch the victory by one game after sets and rubbers were even.

The Drive men managed to keep their top four placing intact after they snuck past a determined Golden Grove line up. The Drive’s Jonothon Norodom started well for his team defeating Jack Brokate at top single. Declan Laginestra then got Golden Grove on the board with a solid win over Sean Swierk at second single. At two rubbers all after the singles, the match came down to the final doubles where Swierk and Norodom squeezed past Brokate and Declan Laginestra 7-6 in the third to win the match on sets after rubbers were all square at three all.

Tea Tree Gully look to have dashed Seaside’s hopes of a finals appearance after they won a tight match four rubbers to two. With rubbers split at two all after the singles it came down to the doubles where TTG managed to win both matches to take a four rubber to two win. TTG will be feeling frustrated after a season that hasn’t been able to build momentum and will leave them out of the finals after a Grand Final appearance last season.

State League heavyweight Trinity crushed an understrength Glenlea six rubbers to zero. Trinity look to be building nicely as finals approach with key players Li Tu and Andrew Tavella both in winning form and youngster Seb Flock continuing his impressive in his first full time State League season.

In the ladies competition, Glenlea upset top placed Memorial Drive in a close match decided by sets. The Drive’s Mel Clayton defeated Elyse Edwards in straights sets at top single however Glenlea’s Brook Milner and Tayla Whitehouse both had straight sets singles wins. At two rubbers all after the singles, the match was decided by the pairing of Edwards and Milner overcoming Tiana and Yasmin Glazbrook in the top doubles to clinch the tie on sets.

In the upset of the season, bottom placed West Lakes had a one set win over second placed Prospect. Jovana Petrov lead the way for West Lakes with a super impressive win over Olivia Ley at top single. Catherine Connolly also managed a win over Prospect youngster Sophie Faull to help set West lakes up for the win.

Tea Tree Gully ladies moved to within one point of top spot when they defeated Kingswood six rubbers to one. Inform youngster Amber Marshall lead the way for TTG with a straight sets win over fellow youngster Natasha Russell at top single. Any Yusa and Simeona Stakic were impressive for TTG with wins at number two and three single while 11 year old Charoltte Kempenaers-Pocz also managed a win for TTG at fourth single.

With three weeks of matches before finals the State League finals race in both the men’s and ladies competitions are heating up.
