Rounds four and five of the 2014 Junior ATL / Angus Thomson Cup were played at the Millswood Tennis Complex on Sunday, with Southern Districts Tennis Association and Eastern Districts Tennis Association asserting their dominance in the Boy’s and Girl’s sides of the competition.

SDTA and EDTA faced off in the early action in what were two very close matches. In the Boy’s matches, Jack Klose from EDTA played a strong match to beat Josh Laka 4-1 4-2, whilst SDTA’s Harrison Paay had a strong win against Daniel Radesic, 4-1 4-1. Both doubles matches were decided by Super-Tiebreaks, with EDTA winning both 12-10 and 10-7, to take the overall win. In the Girls match it was a similar story, with EDTA taking the win overall 4 rubbers to 2. Jieyi Chen had a comprehensive 4-0 4-2 win against Emilia Bowell, whilst Olivia Salvatore and Alana Repanich prevailed with a 4-3 4-3 win against Marit Gillam and Jacqui Scott.

Western Districts Tennis Association defeated North East Tennis Association in the girls, with a 4 rubbers to 2 win. It wasn’t smooth sailing for the WDTA girls as NETA put up a fight. This was shown in the doubles with Caitlin Wyatt and Millie Pearce combining for WDTA to eventually win their match against Jana Milutinovic and Michiko Trebilco 3-4 4-3 10-7. The other Girl’s match between Hills Tennis Association and Glenelg Districts Tennis Association did not take the court after GDTA forfeited, giving HTA a walkover win. In the other boy’s matches, NETA defeated WDTA in a very close encounter, where four of the six matches went to a third set. WDTA’s Harrison Paton defeated NETA’s Rowan McCarthur 4-3 3-4 4-2 to give his team some hope, but in the end Rowan combined with teammate Dale Nixon to beat Harrison and Mitchell Smart 4-3 4-2 to secure the victory for NETA. Meanwhile in the other men’s fixture, HTA defeated GDTA 5 rubbers to 1. Hills were led by Brandon Wall, who was comprehensive in his 4-2 4-2 win against Brad Zidov, whilst Hamish Crawford didn’t drop a game in a 4-0 4-0 win against Jacob Akash.

In the girl’s afternoon round of matches, HTA defeated WDTA 4 rubbers to 2. In the number one singles, Hayley Edwards of HTA defeated Mikaela Pionilla 4-3 3-4 4-3 in a very tight encounter. Nicole Swanson gave WDTA some hope with a 4-3 4-2 win against Rebecca Rice, but unfortunately couldn’t get her team over the line. EDTA showed that they will be hard to beat in the final this weekend with a clinical display against NETA. EDTA only dropped 7 games in their 6 rubbers to 0 win. Olivia Salvatore and Alana Repanich didn’t drop a game in their 4-0 4-0 wins. SDTA received a walkover win against GDTA in the other match. NETA and WDTA had a tight encounter in the boy’s matches also. Dale Nixon gave NETA the perfect start with a 4-1 4-1 win over Jared Waterman of WDTA. Luca Ilic had a 4-2 4-1 win against Blake Lowen to help WDTA over the line 7 sets to 5 after the match ended 3 rubbers a piece. HTA defeated WDTA 5 rubbers to 1. Noah Phillips defeated Nikolai Dobrovolski 4-3 4-2, whilst David Pienaar defeated Harrison Paton 4-1 4-1 to help HTA take the win. In the final match, SDTA defeated GDTA 6 rubbers to 0. SDTA were convincing in their win, only dropping 10 games. Jack Conley defeated Brad Zidov 4-0 4-2, whilst Zachary Mizgalski defeated Jacob Akash 4-2 4-0 as SDTA secured their place in the final this weekend.

The JATL now looks forward to the Finals being held at Next Generation Complex on Sunday 30th November from 9:00am
