South Australians continue to embrace modified ball competitions with the Salisbury Recreation Precinct and Tea Tree Gully Tennis Clubs now running MLC Tennis Hot Shots Orange Ball competition during winter.
Anne-Marie Handke, Community Tennis Officer said “Through the introduction of the MLC Tennis Hot Shots Orange Ball competition we are seeing the confidence of children aged 7-9 years develop as they learn to serve, rally and score in a match. The combination of shorter sets, low compression balls, smaller court size, lowered net builds the necessary skills and confidence to play on a full-size court.
John Warnock-Bennett (Tennis Australia Accredited Club Professional coach, Salisbury Recreation Precinct) said “One of the great benefits of the Orange Ball competition is we can have all the family involved – from older siblings, to parents and even grandparents. It’s not uncommon to have the Dad helping out lowering the net, Mum helping with scoring and Nan on the sidelines cheering. It brings back the days when sport brought the family together.
MLC Tennis Hots Shots sees children progressing through the three different stages (red, orange and green) as their ability improves. At each stage, players use low-compression balls in combination with three different court sizes. Slower balls give players more time and control, making tennis easier to play.
For further information on, please view the MLC Tennis Hot Shots learning to play poster, which outlines the pathway for each colour stage and will help you decide which stage best suits your child.
This is the first orange ball competition to be run in the North East Tennis Association.
The current Salisbury Recreation Precinct and Tea Tree Gully Tennis Clubs Orange Ball Hot Shots Competition is for 10 weeks (May 15th until August 14th) each Sunday morning. Call John Warnock-Bennett on 0422 761 979 or Jason Todd on 0401 559 163 to get your child involved.
