Goolwa Tennis Club has recently created a Youth Scholarship with the aim of supporting young people on and off court.

The inaugural recipient has been announced as Jess Jones, who will participate in our Community Coaching Course later this year. Congratulations Jess!

Jessica (Jess) Jones has a passion for tennis and a strong community spirit that makes her the ideal inaugural recipient of the newly created Goolwa Tennis Club Youth Scholarship.

‘Through this scholarship program, our club aims to provide opportunities for young people to develop a broad range of skills and build their confidence, both on and off the court.  Depending on the nominations we receive, our committee will award at least one scholarship each year. We want this program to be as flexible as possible and really tailored to the needs of each recipient,’ said Club President, Fiona Lange.

Jess, a year 11 student at Encounter Lutheran College, was destined to play tennis…literally, tennis is in her DNA with Mum, Dad and brother all playing the sport competitively.

The young sports woman played Division 1 in both juniors and seniors during the 2022-23 summer season and is looking forward to doing so again this coming season. During winter, she plays with the Goolwa Netball Club and football for the Goolwa Port Eliot Magpies.

The scholarship will fund Jess to undertake the Tennis SA Community Coaching Course this Spring. The course will provide her with the skills to conduct Tennis Hot Shots sessions for junior players at the Goolwa Tennis Club under the mentorship of coach, Mike Howard.

On receiving the scholarship, Jess commented, ‘This means a lot to me because I would have loved to have had a female coach when I was younger. The scholarship also gives me the opportunity to be a small part of increasing the participation and passion for tennis in the Southern Fleurieu.”

Nominations for next year’s scholarship will be called for in June, 2024 and open to both club and non club members aged between 15-24 years.
