As Ngarigo woman and world No.1 Ash Barty continues to make history on the global stage, Tennis SA has unveiled their Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RRAP) at the launch of the 2021 National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – SA in Adelaide on Saturday.

The National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – SA, is a two part event, designed to offer more opportunities for local Indigenous people to access tennis, and create sustainable playing and pathway options in consultation with our First Nations people.

The event was launched at the Tennis SA Clay Courts, with the announcement of the RRAP, tennis and a variety of cultural activities. A second event will be held at Playford Tennis Centre on Thursday 2 September and will see 160 students from Elizabeth North Primary School, Elizabeth South Primary School and Kaurna Plains School come together to participate in tennis and cultural activities.

Tennis SA President Kent Thiele and CEO Debbie Sterrey joined Indigenous tennis players Mia Dodd and Jayden Kemp, along with members of the Tennis SA Reconciliation Working Group to launch the RRAP.

Endorsed by Reconciliation Australia and Reconciliation SA, the RRAP uses the four core pillars of relationships, respect, opportunities and governance to provide a framework with the aim of ensuring that tennis is a sport accessible to all.

“Our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan details our vision to ensure that tennis is accessible, brings communities together and provides more opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to participate and engage in our sport,” Tennis SA CEO, Debbie Sterrey said.

“The National Indigenous Tennis Carnival forms a key part of our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan and broader Indigenous tennis strategy, and we look forward to progressing all areas of our RRAP to make tennis accessible and sustainable for all communities, while ensuring we have meaningful impact.

“We are thrilled to be hosting National Indigenous Tennis Carnival events here in South Australia this year and we are pleased to have welcomed our local community to the first event on Saturday.”

The National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – SA event forms one of eight happening around Australia in 2021 as part of a national celebration bringing Indigenous youth and coaches together, enabling more players to come and try the sport for the first time or further their skills, while learning about, and celebrating, First Nations culture.
