We catch up with Tennis SA’s coach of the year David Grainger to find out more about how his Cardio Tennis program has complemented his overall tennis offering in South Australia.

Where do you deliver Cardio Tennis?

Henley South Tennis Club and Grange Lawn Tennis Club in the western suburbs of Adelaide.

How many sessions do you run per week?

Currently I deliver three sessions a week across the two venues:  two evening sessions, (7-8pm), one at each club and a morning time at Grange Lawn (9.30-10.30am).  My aim is to offer at least another session for first term this year due to high demand.

What’s motivates you to offer Cardio Tennis as one of your coaching programs?

Cardio Tennis provides an exciting choice for our current and new players at my clubs.  It also provides me with variation, mixing up what I deliver daily, keeping me enthusiastic with MLC Tennis Hot Shots, team training, private lessons and now Cardio Tennis.

What do you love about Cardio Tennis?

People coming along to a session who may not have tried tennis before, not knowing anybody, and within minutes, personal barriers have dropped and friendships are made.

In our case, with new adult members being hard to come across, Cardio Tennis has brought new players to the club, who may not have thought about joining before.  Some have become competition players and a few of these have even joined our committees, offering refreshing outlooks and ideas.

What would be your number one fitness tip you give to your participants?

Stick to the format of the session to help reduce injury.  Don’t go too hard too early.  Allow your body to warm up and cool down.  I find this more applicable to male participants.

What do his participants think?

Serena Molloy said “Our Cardio Tennis instructor David Grainger at Henley South Tennis Club makes sure we get the best out of our workout with his infectious enthusiasm and sense of humour.

Although we are working very hard we all have a great time and a good laugh.  As testament to Dave’s attributes he was recently awarded ‘Coach of the Year’ at the Tennis SA awards night.”
