Part of the Australian Open Tennis Blitz, eleven Win a Wildcard events have been held around the country over the past two weekends, including two events held in South Australia.

The very first event in Australia was held at the Berri View Lawn Tennis Club on Friday 10 October as a part of the week long Regional Foundation Cup tournament.

After some close matches throughout the night, the A Grade competition was won by Adelaide’s Jim Chaousis and Olivia Lukaszewicz who defeated Shane Nettle and Kate Saville in the final four games to one. The B Grade competition was won by Kingston’s Andrew and Jane Lyon, who defeated Phil Smith and Belinda Dare, four games to two.

South Australia’s Win a Wildcard campaign finished up on Sunday with our second and final event held at Kensington Gardens Lawn Tennis Club in perfect conditions.

The A Grade was hotly contested with some very close and entertaining matches. Jean Van Rensburg and Ania Kritzinger emerged victorious with a nail biting win over Jay Laginestra and Catherine Connolly, four games to three.

In the B Grade, Ian Delbridge and Angelique Foran enjoyed a straightforward path to the final, losing just two games in their first five matches. In the final, they came up against Daniel Anderson and Jessica Lang. An entertaining match followed, with Delbridge and Foran taking the win, four games to two.

Jim, Olivia, Andrew, Jane, Jean, Ania, Ian and Angelique have now earned the right to play in the national Win a Wildcard event to be held in Melbourne as part of December Showdown. The eventual winner of the A Grade competition in Melbourne will be awarded an Australian Open Mixed Doubles Wildcard, receiving the full Grand Slam treatment this summer including tournament accreditation and access to all player services.
