This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week. A week which highlights the importance of volunteers and how vital they are in creating change within the community.

Over the course of the week, we will highlight some of the key local people in our tennis community who volunteer their time at their club, community, or workplace.

Our next volunteer we highlight is Darryl Downing from Range View Tennis Club. Darryl was a finalist for the Volunteer Achievement Award at last year’s Tennis West Awards Gala Night.

Darryl has been instrumental in developing Range View Park Tennis Club in all pillars of thriving tennis communities. He is a strategic thinker, always putting the needs of tennis and the club first, even where difficult and challenging decisions must be made. He capitalises on all resources offered to him and engages across many stakeholders to leverage the position of the club.

Seeing the tennis club come alive into a buzzing atmosphere is what makes volunteering worthwhile for Darryl.

“The most rewarding aspect of volunteering is when you see that you have empowered one of your members. One of our shy, quiet members took on a role on our committee and her confidence has grown exponentially over the years.”

“During my time at the club, we have become affiliated with Tennis West and I have built good relationships with Tennis West, local schools, government and other local clubs, to provide a financially secure, well maintained and run facility that is a happy place to be at.”

The club is easy to access for the entire community, whether they be school children, families, social players, or court hirers,” said Darryl.

Tennis in Western Australia would not exist without dedicated volunteers, who selflessly give their time to clubs across WA week in, week out.

If you are interested in volunteering, reach out to your local club. They would love to hear from you!
