TOA

If you love tennis, want to make new friends, and contribute to the growth of Australia’s favourite sport, then chances are you already have what it takes to become a tennis official!

WA’s Debbie Napier was recently selected to officiate on lines at the Davis Cup tie in Darwin – a fantastic achievement!

Hear from Deb first hand on what it was like to be involved in such a fantastic event:

There are lots of reasons why people become line umpires. I got into it sort of by accident, but loved it so much I kept going.

I was extremely fortunate to be one of the umpires selected to officiate at this July’s Davis Cup tie between Australia and Kazakhstan, held in Darwin.

I would have to say this experience was definitely a highlight for me.  The difference between this event and others such as The Australian Open, is that we had a much smaller group of officials. We had the same group of people every day both on and off court, so we got to know each other really well. It also helped that we were in a beautiful part of Australia that many of us had never been to before, so when we had a chance to socialise and sightsee, we did it as a group. The atmosphere both on and off court was incredible. The crowd from both countries got very involved and I was humbled to be a part of this history-making event.

I encourage anyone thinking of becoming a line umpire to give it a go. If you work hard and always do your best, you never know what you might have the opportunity to do.
