With many membership years about to commence, clubs and associations are reminded of the importance of complying with national privacy laws. In 2014, Australian privacy legislation was updated and the fines for breaching privacy law requirements have increased significantly.

In order to make it easier for affiliated tennis clubs and associations to comply with national privacy laws, Tennis Australia developed a privacy policy which can be adopted by affiliated organisations. The Tennis Privacy Policy can be found here. (http://www.tennis.com.au/privacy)

To ensure your organisation is fully compliant with Australian privacy laws, it is important you understand that when you collect data from your members you must seek their permission to communicate with them. Members have the right to specify what communications they would like to receive as a member of your club or association.

There are different levels of communications such as:

  • Tennis specific communications regarding tennis programs and activities. It is expected that members will receive tennis specific communications from time to time from their club/association, state body and/or Tennis Australia; however, it is important that members are aware of this and have provided their consent.
  • Tennis offers. Members have the option to opt in to receive further tennis offers from your club/association, state body and/or Tennis Australia. These communications might include information about coaching programs or competitions at your club. Communications such as these can only be sent if the member agrees to receive such offers.
  • Third party offers. From time to time you may wish to communicate offers from other organisations, such as your sponsors, to members. These communications might include information about a sale or event that the sponsor is running. Communications such as these can only be sent if a member agrees to receive such offers
