Each December the best players from around the country assemble at Melbourne Park for the December Showdown to compete in the following events:

• 12’s Australian Championships
• 14’s Australian Championships
• 16’s Australian Championships
• 18’s Australian Championships
• 12’s and 14’s State Team Event
• Men’s and Women’s Australian Open Main Draw Wildcard Playoff

In 2014, Western Australia had a total of 35 athletes compete in the December Showdown. The December Showdown is an opportunity for the best tennis players in Australia to compete against one another to find out who is the best player in each age group.

National Academy athlete – Maddison Inglis was the best-performed player from WA. The 16 year old finished runner-up in the 18’s Australian Championships and won the 18’s doubles title with her partner Pricilla Hon from QLD. Maddison was then invited to compete in the Australian Open Women’s Wildcard Playoff where she reached the quarterfinals before losing in three sets to Naiktha Bains.

Tristan Schoolkate was a doubles finalist in the 14’s Australian Championships doubles event with his partner Rinky Hijikarta from NSW.

Scott Jones narrowly missed out of making the quarterfinals of the 18’s Australian Championships after playing some great tennis. Scott did not move through the group stages of the event due to a count back.

We trust that the 35 athletes who competed in the December Showdown learnt a lot from the experience and will come back better and stronger in 2015.
