Daria Gavrilova’s run at the BNP Paris Open ended as she lost for the first time in six meetings with seventh seed Caroline Garcia.

The French player held off the Australian 26th seed 7-5 6-4 in one hour and 57 minutes to reach the third round in Indian Wells.

Gavrilova had won all five of their previous encounters stretching back seven years, dropping just two sets along the way, but Garcia had the edge this time.

The world number seven broke serve five times to three as she did enough to see off Gavrilova in two tight sets.

Garcia goes on to face Angelique Kerber or Elena Vesnina in the last 32, while Gavrilova will next head to the Miami Open as Australian interest in the singles ends in Indian Wells.
