Canberra, ACT, 23 March 2019 | Asher Packman

Destanee Aiava has prevailed in an all-Australian semifinal with Olivia Rogowska at the ACT Claycourt International #1, booking her place in Sunday’s final with a commanding victory.

It is the third time in four years that Aiava has reached the final of this event, but she is yet to claim the title.

The second seed will have a busy day on Sunday, after also progressing to the doubles final with Ellen Perez. They will face top seeds Naiktha Bains and Slovakian Tereza Mihailkova.

“It’s really good to get through to another final in Canberra, in doubles as well, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow and hoping I can do well in both events,” Aiava said.

“I love playing here, it’s a great atmosphere, and it’s so close to Sydney it’s almost like a home away from home.”

Rogowska, 27, came into Saturday’s semifinal having won 12 of her past 13 matches in Canberra, winning the 2017 Canberra International and making the final last year, however she was no match for Aiava who comfortably took it 6-1 6-4.

The second semifinal saw Japan’s Risa Ozaki play countrywoman Eri Hozumi for the sixth time, with Ozaki leading their head-to-head 3-2.  Ozaki is also a former Canberra International champion, while Hozumi won the ACT Claycourt International #1 in 2016.

In the end, Ozaki extended her dominance, winning 6-2 7-5, to set up a second clash with Aiava, after the teenager took the honours at the Australian Pro Tour event in Bendigo.

“Every day is different,” Aiava said. “She’s been playing well, so hopefully we’ll just have a fair game and I can do well. I’m feeling pretty good, the body is holding up well, so we will see how we go tomorrow.”
