16 September 2013 | Tennis Queensland

Tennis Queensland in conjunction with Tennis Australia, Redlands City Council and the Australian Governments Learn Earn Legend! Initiative visited Minjerribah / North Stradbroke Island on Wednesday 11th September.

Throughout the day, the Year 1 to Year 6 classes from Dunwich Primary School enjoyed Tennis in Schools MLC Tennis Hot Shots lessons with Community Tennis Officers.

The afternoon Come & Try session opened with a lovely Welcome to Country by Aunty Margaret Iselin, then kids and adults got into some free-time tennis, lessons with Tennis Australia National Indigenous coach Ian Goolagong and had a go of the ‘Speed Serve’ activities.

With the beautiful bay in the background and the sun shining, all of the kids involved loved the opportunity that was provided to them by ‘tennis’ coming to the community. It seemed to definitely spark a renewed interest in not only playing tennis, but also using the local Allsports Club tennis courts for social use on a more regular basis!

On top of the visit to the Island, Tennis Queensland/Tennis Australia was able to donate a Hot Shots equipment pack which will be available for ongoing and sustainable tennis activities in the community.

Looking ahead….

The Allsports Club will be offering a tennis program with an experienced tennis coach through to November.  The Queensland Government provided funding assistance to the club for this program to increase Queenslanders participation in sport and recreation activities.

We look forward to working further with the community on North Stradbroke Island and can’t wait to return!
