27 March 2013 | Tennis Queensland

Another great display of tennis was on show today at the Bundaberg Tennis International as the first round singles matches were completed.

All feature men’s matches went as scripted in the first round of the Bundaberg Tennis International which kicked off this week. The top four seeds in the men’s comp were successful in their respective opening rounds. Top seed James Duckworth from New South Wales took down fellow statesman David Barclay. After Barclay survived two set points in the first set, Duckworth powered through the second, taking the match 7-6(4) 6-1. Defending champion and third seed from Brisbane, Jason Kubler was in scintillating form as he took apart young New South Welshman Nicholas Horton 6-1 6-1. Kubler will be one to watch as we get deeper into the Queensland Pro Tour circuit – especially for local tennis fans.

In the women’s, third Sacha Jones from Australia took down Japanese veteran and former French Open Doubles semi finalist Rika Fujiwara 6-3 6-4. Storm Sanders continued with the form that saw her reach the final at Ipswich last week by defeating Japan’s Akiko Omae. After cruising through the first set, Sanders was made to work for the second eventually coming out with a 6-0 7-6(5) victory.

Tomorrow will see men’s and women’s top seeds James Duckworth and Olivia Rogowska take to the court for their second round matches. Also in action will be Queenslander Michael Look [5], returning after reaching the quarter finals in the City of Ipswich International last week. Play kicks off at 10:00am at the Drinan Park Tennis Centre.

The Bundaberg Tennis International is part of the 2013 Australian Pro Tour, a series of professional tennis events that bridge junior events and the ATP/WTA Tour.
