20 September 2011 | Tennis Queensland

On the afternoon of September 19th 2011,  Gold Coast tennis fans were treated to perfect weather on the Gold Coast and something very special, with a parade and ceremony for Australia’s number one female player Sam Stosur.

The Broadwater Parklands venue at Southport saw over 2500 locals supporting Sam’s recent efforts in winning the US Open and becoming the first Australian woman in 31 years to capture a singles Slam title.

Fans were able to see Sam up close, as she was paraded around the venue in a classic car from the 60’s. Another athlete from that same era – Mayor Ron Clarke handed Sam the keys to the City to the cheers of the crowd with Queensland Premier Anna Bligh in support.

Tennis Queensland Community Tennis Officers’ Nathan Griffiths and Travis Dragojlo ran an MLCTHS exhibition with free giveaways and mini tennis on offer. Hundreds of enthusiastic youngsters were picking up racquets and having a go at the greatest sport on earth.   Tennis Queensland CEO Cameron Pearson helped out on the day along with the Tennis Queensland Mascot – Terry the Tennis Ball (who had put on a few pounds since the Doomben sprint race).

It was announced at the Ceremony that Sam will be joining Australia’s other number 1 player and Gold Coast local Bernard Tomic in the Brisbane International 2012.

Ground passes for the Brisbane International are $14.90 and include train travel!!!!
