Arina Rodionova has progressed to round two of US Open qualifying with an gritty straight-sets win over Brazil’s Paula Cristina Goncalves.

Rodionova won 7-6(2) 7-5 to set up a second-round match against China’s Han Xinyun.

The news was not so good for Australia’s men, however; Andrew Whittington, Luke Saville and John-Patrick Smith were all bundled out in the first round.

Smith, who qualified for the main draw in New York in 2015, was beaten 6-2 7-5 by Tobias Kamke, while Whittington fell 6-4 6-4 to 12th seed Joao Souza of Brazil.

Saville went down in a heartbreaker to American wildcard Christian Harrison – after winning the first set, the South Australian lost 4-6 6-0 7-5.

Rodionova and Matt Barton, the only two Aussies remaining in qualifying, will contest their second round matches on Thursday at Flushing Meadows.
