John Millman is through to the second round of the Shenzhen Open after Ernests Gulbis retired with an injury. Millman was leading the former world No.10 7-6(7) 2-0 when the up-and-down Latvian called it quits.
The Aussie will go on to face former US Open champion Marin Cilic in the second round of the ATP 250 event.
Fellow Aussie James Duckworth didn’t fare so well, falling to American Austin Krajicek in the other main draw match of the day.
Krajicek lost Monday’s opening set, but fought back to take the second on a tie break and level the match before seeing out a 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 victory.
