Update 8.30am: Matt Ebden stands just one win away from the main draw of the US Open after winning his second-round qualifying match on Thursday in New York.

The West Australian needed three sets to overcome American Dennis Novikov, recovering from the loss of the second set to finish strongly; the final score was 6-3 6-7(3) 6-2.

Later on Thursday, John-Patrick Smith also advanced to the final round with a 7-5 6-2 victory over Vincent Millot.

Smith, the No.18 seed, will take on the winner of the match between Nicolas Almagro and Guilherme Clezar, while 26th seed Ebden next faces Brit Brydan Klein, who advanced with a straight-sets win over Tristan Lamasine over France.

Wins in the final round would see Ebden and Smith join a seven-strong Australian contingent in the US Open main draw.
