John Millman recovered to defeat Gilles Muller on Monday and reach the second round of the Nature Valley International in Eastbourne.

Millman won 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2 to set up a meeting in the last 16 with either No.5 seed Leonardo Mayer or Gilles Simon of France.

Muller is a grass-court danger, last year reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon after winning in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and advancing to the semifinals at Queen’s.

But the lefty from Luxembourg slumped to his 10th defeat from his past 12 matches.

Millman, who qualified for the main draw at Queen’s last week, recorded his eighth win in 2018 after losing the first set.

The news was not so good for Sam Stosur in the women’s draw at Eastbourne.

A semifinalist in Mallorca last week, Stosur recovered from 5-1 down to take the first set over Alison Van Uytvanck.

Yet the Belgian regrouped to run out a 5-7 7-6(3) 6-3 winner in two hours and 40 minutes.

Van Uytvanck next faces No.7 seed Daria Kasatkina.

At the ATP grass-court event in Antalya, Turkey, Jordan Thompson went down to Jiri Vesely in the first round on Monday.

Vesely prevailed 6-4 7-6(5) in just under two hours, with Thompson left to rue a 0/9 conversion rate on break points.
