Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic has scored an upset victory over world No.13 Elena Vesnina at the Miami Open.

World No.594 Tomljanovic overcame Indian Wells champion Vesnina 3-6 6-4 7-5 to secure a spot in the third round.

The 23-year-old Tomljanovic led Russia’s Vesnina 5-3 in the third set on Thursday when a thunderstorm halted play, returned on Friday (Saturday AEDT) and cashed in on her third match point.

One-time world No.47 Tomljanovic made her return last month after just over a year on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.
