Brisbane QLD, Australia, 7 December 2014 | Tennis Queensland

The Tennis Brisbane Chargers have become the first Queensland side to take out a hat-trick of Asia-Pacific Tennis League (ATL) – Queensland Conference titles with a 4-2 win over the Shaw Park Sharks in the men’s final today.

The champions were forced to fight coming up against the Sharks who were bolstered by the inclusion of Australian no. 6 male James Duckworth, leading his team to a potential upset.

But the Chargers stayed strong in the searing Queensland heat, and used the experience of top players including Gavin van Peperzeel, Robert Smeets and Maverick Banes to charge home with the win. Chargers leader John Millman parochially cheered on his teammates from the on-court coaching position.

In front of a strong home crowd, Tennyson Volt was buoyed by yesterday’s inclusion of world no. 72 Jarmila Gajdosova in the women’s draw. They came up against two-time defending champions Shaw Park Sharks who were led by Grand Slam doubles finalist and local favourite Ashleigh Barty, joined by some of Queensland’s best young women including Priscilla Hon and Ashling Sumner.

The strong teams led to Queensland’s closest ATL final to date with the results tied and requiring a count back after all rubbers were complete. The end result was arguably the biggest upset in the Conference’s history at 3 rubbers all, 7 sets all and 44-39 games in Volt’s favour.

Both the Tennyson Volt and Tennis Brisbane Chargers will now go on to represent Queensland at the Asia-Pacific Tennis League Playoffs during the Australian Open in January. The Chargers will look to go one better after placing second in the national playoffs in 2014.
