Australia’s Junior Fed Cup team has lost to Russia in the final of the world 16-and-under team event in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
The Russian team, the top seeds, were simply too strong, beating Australian singles players Priscilla Hon and Naiktha Bains in straight sets to claim a 2-0 victory.
Meanwhile, Australia’s Junior Davis Cup team defeated Germany to claim third place in the competition.
Team captain Mark Draper said the week in Mexico, which saw Australia outperform its sixth seeding, was a successful one.
“I thought the team bonded very well and supported each other at every opportunity,” he said.
“It’s obviously very important for the guys to play in these high level team events where possible. It’s increased pressure playing for your country and your mates and I definitely saw some inspired play from all players because they were playing for each other.”
