Australian young gun Thanasi Kokkinakis has progressed to the quarterfinals of the US Open following a three-set win over Austria’s Lucas Miedler.

The South Australian won 6-2 6-7(6) 6-2, setting up a quarterfinal showdown with second seed Gianluigi Quinzi of Italy.

Kokkinakis and Quinzi also combined for the boys’ doubles event at Flushing Meadows this year, but on Thursday went down 6-2 7-6(7) to France’s Quentin Halys and Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal.

The singles quarterfinal between Kokkinakis and Quinzi will pit two of 2013’s strongest-performing juniors against one another; Quinzi is the reigning junior Wimbledon champion, while Kokkinakis reached the Australian Open boys’ final in January.

Against Miedler, Kokkinakis shrugged off the disappointment of dropping the second set in tight circumstances, roaring back in the third to break serve twice and win almost 80 per cent of his first serve points.

Kokkinakis will face Quinzi on Friday afternoon (US Eastern time).
