Matthew Ebden defeated France’s Gilles Simon 6-2 2-6 7-6(8) at the Shanghai Masters to reach the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final of his career.

Ebden, a qualifier ranked 124th in the world, downed the no.8 seed in three sets and will now play Scot Andy Murray for a spot in the semifinals.

“It will be a tough match,” Murray said. “He’s obviously just coming off the best win of his career, so he’ll be confident.”

Ebden has enjoyed recent good form taking world number 5 David Ferrer to three sets in the second round of the Japan Open last week after once again battling through the qualifying rounds.
