Australia’s Peter Luczak has lost in the first round of the ATP tournament in Santiago, the first clay-court event of the ATP season.
Luczak, 31, went down to Spain’s world No.71 Pablo Andujar 6-4 6-4 just two weeks after losing his opening round match at the Australian Open to Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic.
Defending champion and third seed Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil cruised into the second round with a 6-2 6-2 win over Italy’s Filippo Volandri.
Spanish sixth seed Tommy Robredo bounced back after a sluggish start to account for Portugal’s Frederico Gil 2-6 6-3 6-4, while Brazil’s Ricardo Mello outlasted Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-4 6-7(5) 7-6(6).
Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Russia’s Igor Andreev were other first-round winners on day one of the tournament.
Top seed David Nalbandian and second seed Juan Monaco, both of Argentina, are scheduled to play on Tuesday.
The Chile ATP event is the first of four on clay across Latin America, with other stops in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.
