The winter weather was no problem for the record number of entries to the three July school holiday tournaments held at the State Tennis Centre and Mt Lawley Tennis Club.
Across the three tournaments held during the Term 2 school holidays, a total of 534 players entered, up from 521 last year. The Mt Lawley Junior Hardcourt Classic saw the most entries with 211 up from 202 last year.
In the Open State Hardcourt tournament held from the 10th – 14th July held at the State Tennis Centre, there was a considerable uplift in quality in the open field of the tournament. It was great to see engagement from some of the top WA players in the mixed doubles event with four pairs competing with the winners being Trevor Eastwood and Isabelle Criddle.
In the men’s and women’s open singles final Lincoln Duckett defeated Brendan Jayaprakash 2-6 6-3 10-6 in a match tie-break while Sunny Youn was too good for Charlotte Mweemba 6-1 6-2.
The State Tennis Centre was host to the Perth Hardcourt Championships from the 15th– 19th July which saw a total of 128 players across 14 events from ages 12 to 16. A highlight of the tournament was a match point saving rally in the Boy’s U12’s doubles final that lasted for over eight minutes and saw a total rally of 216 shots (yes, we counted every shot).
It was a credit to all tournament players and organisers for completing a total of 829 matches across the three tournaments with rain affected days and some unusually warmer than average warm winter weather.
